What to Look For in an Affordable Hotel

There are occasions when we feel like some real luxury while travelling, and there are times when we simply want a clean bed and pleasant surroundings, somewhere to rest at the end of a busy day sightseeing. Economy, or 3-star hotel accommodation is great value for money, and with that in mind, here are a few aspects that come together to offer everything you look for in hotel accommodation.

  • Security – Regardless of anything, security is paramount and with the reception always manned and CCTV in all the public areas, you can rest assured that you are in a safe place. Each room would have a small safe that the guest can password protect, for keeping small valuables. The car pack should also be manned around the clock, and most hotels would have staff on reception 24/7, which is comforting for the guests. Some hotels directly employ their own security staff, while others contract this to a local security firm, but either way, it is important to have visible security in a hotel.
  • Cleanliness – Even the cheapest hotel should be clean and anything less should be avoided, as disease carrying pests are likely present, and this would indicate a problem with the hotel management. Always check under the bed and in the corners of the room, under floor curtains and behind doors, as these are areas that are often overlooked, and regarding the reception area, if there was anything amiss, you would notice it. If you do find dirt, this means there is no quality control, as the under manager should inspect every room and the communal areas on a daily basis. Towels and bedlinen should be spotless and smell fresh, and cleanliness doesn’t cost money, so every establishment should be clean at all times.
  • Accessibility – If, for example, you are looking for a hotel in Bangkok, you want to be within walking distance of the major places of interest, with Ratchada Road being the ideal location for a short stay in Bangkok. That way, you can explore the nightlife to your heart’s content, knowing you are no more than 5 minutes away from your room. There are some amazing temples that are tucked away and taking an experience bus ride and getting off at random will certainly reveal some treasures, as would a trip on one of the longboat canal taxis that interweave through the city and offer a glimpse of how the local people live.
  • Amenities – Ideally, the hotel would have a pool, a fitness room and a nice, quiet outdoor area to enjoy the sun. Room service would be expected and depending on the size of the hotel, room service might be round the clock. Some boutique hotels have in-house spa facilities, which is great when you want to pamper yourself. Here is an interesting blog that asks the question, “Why is travelling fun?”, which is worth a read.
  • Multimedia – You should have cable TV, with at least 50 channels that include popular platforms like BBC and CNN, along with at least one movie channel, for when you fancy staying in. Hi-speed Wi-Fi is another must, as the travelling businessperson needs to keep abreast of things, and you normally receive a password for the Internet when signing in.
  • Pleasant Staff – It really does make all the difference when hotel staff are friendly and helpful, and whether a backpacker’s hostel or a 5-star hotel, if you are around happy people, it will make your stay that much nicer. This is very often the reason a guest returns to a hotel, and most general managers would be aware of how staff interact with guests. If you are planning a trip to Bangkok, check out the Tourism Authority of Thailand for up to date information.
  • Great Food and Bar Service – Sometimes we just like to sit down with a drink and reflect on the day, so there should be at least one bar within the hotel, and a restaurant. If a group of businesspeople are staying, they would like to have a few drinks together in nice surroundings, and some hotels promote their bar facilities to non-residents.

Bangkok is a vibrant city that demands investigation, and what looks like chaos at first sight is actually a flow of people and vehicles that gets people where they want to go, and the happy-go-lucky disposition is due to the Buddhist philosophy of living in the moment, which is why Thai people are always smiling.

Regardless of where you are, you are never far away from an affordable hotel, which doesn’t mean anything should be lacking, indeed, there are many great value economy hotels with a lot to offer their guests. The Internet is a great way to source and book an affordable hotel in Bangkok, or any other city, for that matter, and with inexpensive accommodation, you can afford to buy more souvenirs for family and friends.
