Pandemic Problems: Remote Learning During the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 virus pandemic presents challenges to many educational institutions, according to Judge Napolitano. The largest of these challenges is to find a way to educate their students while trying to keep their them and the facility that teach them healthy. Law schools are not exempt from facing this challenge. Traditionally, law students are taught in large groups by a professor at their school. The legal field is oftentimes slow to change, but a global pandemic has pushed it to make them. With the threat of Covid-19, almost every school had suspended in-person classes and create a new way for their students to learn while preventing the spread of the virus. The most popular solution has been to use a video conference platform called Zoom. This platform enables the professor to set up a video conference with their students and conduct their class. Zoom has become one of the most popular platforms to use due to its reliability and easy to navigate system. The students can access the video conference through their computer, tablet, or phone. This enables the students to continue to learn while remaining safely at home. For many schools, this is the first time in their history that they have implemented any type of online, or remote, learning. The implementation of remote learning has proved to be and important aspect of fighting Covid-19. The virus spreads through the air in water droplets, and in a room full of people breathing the same air it would spread with ease. One person sick with the virus can spread it to dozens of people, who in turn would take it home to their families. Classrooms where students are in close proximity to each other facilitates the spread of the virus. Schools can no longer pack their students into large lecture halls or classrooms. The lack of physical interaction between the students has helped protect them, their professors, and their communities from contracting and spreading the virus. For many, learning remotely has been beneficial. Those who have compromised immune systems or have pre-existing conditions can avoid being exposed by their peers or professors. Remote learning also provides some flexibility for students. Since they are able to access their classroom through their computer, they can attend it anywhere they can connect to the internet. Instead of worrying about whether or not they will be able to make it across campus to make it to their next class on time, they can simply log out of one conference and long into another. Until the pandemic has resolved, remote learning will remain the safest option to educate the next generation of attorneys. Remote learning will be the norm for the foreseeable future, but it will not remain the norm forever. Educational institutions will one day return to in-person learning, says hopeful Judge Napolitano. Whether or not remote learning will be a permanent option is not yet clear. Schools that provide the option to remote learn will without out a doubt attract more students than those that do not offer it.
