Father Rutler: Asking People to Stay Positive During Covid

In the past year, many unpredictable events have certainly tested the world in so many aspects of life. The largest event of all was the Covid-19 outbreak. Now, after dealing with it for over ten months, people are running out of patience, financial security, and most importantly, they are running out of hope that this pandemic will ever come to an end. Although that feeling of doubt is creeping into everyone’s minds, this chapter of life is temporary. It would be nice to wake up tomorrow and hear the news that the virus has vanished and normal life may proceed. That day will soon come, but in the meantime, we must maintain a positive, optimistic perspective. 

Father Rutler, who is the pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Church in New York, strongly encourages people to stay optimistic despite the troubling times. He has years of experience preaching the lessons of God to his believers. After he received a Master’s degree of Studies from the University of Oxford in 1988, he preached the Lord’s teachings to the students, teachers, faculty and the townspeople of Oxford. He is viewed as a leader, a symbol of hope for the people of the Catholic faith. In today’s world, he wants to be viewed in a similar role when it comes to the pandemic. He wants the public to remain calm, and not let them think this is the end of the world. This too shall pass, and we will all come out of it as better people than we were before. 

As a pastor, George Rutler wants to instill hope and faith in people, instead of letting them dwell on the fear. As a way to do that, he wanted to share some positive news about the coronavirus as a way to ease all of the stress:

1. Over 175 million people have been vaccinated worldwide. To think that the pandemic hit just about a year ago and already we have reached such a significant number of vaccinations is unbelievable. It is a great way to show all of the progress that has been made.
2. Scientists have made history at the speed in which they were able to find a vaccine and tackle the virus. It is eye opening to see how far we have come in the past 100 years in terms of science and medicine. It reminds us that we are currently in the best hands possible. 
3. Testing and contract tracing have tremendously improved. At the beginning of the pandemic, it was a nightmare trying to get a test due to the lack of supply. It was also a challenge for scientists to try and track how fast the virus was spreading. Nowadays, the nation has a much tighter grip on the process of testing and tracing. 
4. Anthony Fauci seems very optimistic. The leading doctor and immunologist who is leading the nation through the pandemic has hope and says that due to biomedical research and science, we will “crush” the Covid-19 pandemic.

Similar to his teachings of Catholicism, Rutler wants the world to believe that everything happens for a reason, and God always has a plan. This article should be looked at as a sign of relief, and as a helpful tool to reduce the reader’s stress and anxiety over the uncertain times we are currently living in.
