Decluttering: The golden rules to abide by

Over the last few years it has become something of a buzzword, but the effects of decluttering are there for all to see if you look hard enough. Many believe that this isn’t just something which makes you home look a little bit nicer, but it’s something that can promote fantastic psychological benefits as well.

We’ll leave it up to you to research the possible benefits, but for the purpose of today we are going to jump into the ‘how’ of decluttering. There have been a lot of guides published on the subject over recent years and through today’s article, we will pick out some of the best suggestions that we have come across.

Decide whether it’s staying, or going

The top and bottom of decluttering is sometimes getting rid of all of those items that put simply, you don’t really need.

Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. It is almightily difficult for a lot of us to let go of certain items and it subsequently means that much of it is left to linger in the home and cause clutter.

This is where you almost need to take a brutal course of action. One simple rule is that if you haven’t used an item in a set period of time (usually between six and twelve months), it’s time to get rid. This might mean that you bin it, but in today’s day and age recycling or donating are two preferred options. Or, if you are on the fence, take a look at safestore.co.uk which might mean you can “experiment” by temporarily living without a particular item.

Take advantage of wall space

A lot of people complain that they don’t have enough cupboard space to store items which are causing clutter, but who’s to say that you have to store items in cupboards?

Instead, be as creative as you can with other spaces. The walls fall into this category and simply hanging items on them is one of the easiest ways to do this. It doesn’t have to stop with the walls of your home either – it might be the inside of cupboard doors which can serve a very similar purpose.

The perils of incoming papers

You might have spent months mastering your decluttering plan, but it all goes into disarray as soon as papers start to flock through your door. Mail is something that often gets left on the side; bills get placed on one table, while advertisements for local companies get put on another.

It means that not before long, your home is awash with paperwork. To get around this, have dedicated spaces for all of your papers so they are not circulating everywhere.

Make sure everyone in the house knows where everything belongs

Finally, you may have decided where each and every item is going to live, but that doesn’t mean that things are going to stay this way. On the contrary, as soon as everyone else in the household gets involved, things can quickly get out of hand again very quickly.

This is where you need to almost have an education session. Tell the kids and anyone else you live with where their items live, and make sure they stay there. Otherwise, you’ll just be revisiting your decluttering plan in months to come – and it will be terribly frustrating.
