Fitness Adventure: How To Create The Perfect Home Gym

Find out how to create a fantastic space for your own home fitness adventure, with tips on decor, organisation and safety.

The health and wellness trend shows no sign of slowing down in 2021, with the average person spending £1,733 pounds on this aspect of their life in order to maintain a healthy body and mind. If you’ve ever paid for a diet plan, nutritionist, splashed out on health foods, or paid for a personal trainer you know just how much money a healthy lifestyle can cost. But it doesn’t have to be that way…

The great news is, being healthy doesn’t have to cost the Earth. In fact, there is one area you can save a ton of money and that’s by avoiding a regular gym membership every month. And, let’s face it most of us don’t make as much use of our gum memberships as we should. So you can save money by setting up your own home gym, for the convenience and lower costs of working out right in your own home.

To create your very own workout space at home, here are some top tips to help you create the perfect home gym:

Think Carefully About The Location

It is so important to think carefully about where you place your home gym. Ideally, it will be somewhere that isn’t above ground floor. If you’re bouncing around and placing heavy equipment in there, you really don’t want that to be happening in a first or second floor. You also have to consider getting the equipment in there and if you plan on having anything like an exercise bike or rowing machine they are heavy bits of kit to hoist up a flight of stairs.

You should also choose somewhere where your workout music tracks don’t disturb the rest of the household, and a section of the house where there is access to water and electricity already installed. With that in mind, it’s clear that the loft or attic is not the best place but maybe partitioning off part of a large garage could be.

Declutter

You will have to clear out the space that you have decided you are turning into your home gym. This won’t just be a simple case of clearing out a few bits because to be really useful and usable, a home gym requires more space than you might think. Instead, you will need to clear the whole space out. You could declutter your unwanted items, sell them, or move them to another room. Alternatively, you could put everything into secure cheap self storage until you have decided what to do with it. Some people actually do it the other way round and use their self storage unit as a gym, but if your facility doesn’t allow that, it’s OK to simply clear a room using that handy self storage unit to keep other things in.

Decorate With Practicality & Pizazz

It is a good idea to decorate your gym with practicality in mind as a primary concern. You’ll want hygienic flooring that is easily cleaned, and easily matted. Carpets are generally a big no-no for this sort of space.

With the walls, you’ll want to stay neutral so you don’t get a headache from busy patterns or loud colours when you workout. That being said – this is your space to boost your body and mind so if inspirational quotes on the wall, murals and bright colours inspire you then get them in that home gym. It’s all a matter of personal taste at the end of the day.

It is also worth considering other practical additions to the gym such as:

  • Floor mats
  • Blinds
  • Air conditioning/ heating
  • A music system
  • A sink or some sort of water system to top up your water bottle/ dampen your towel

Start Equipment Collection Off Slow

You might want to go all in with your gym equipment collection, but that isn’t a good idea for a few reasons. One reason is that if you are new to home fitness it may be that you change your mind on having a home gym, or on the way you like to workout. Another reason is to break up the costs, because gym equipment is not cheap! All you really need to get started is some space, maybe some weights and kettlebells, and some WIFI. From that point you can slowly build up your collection to include more established equipment. Don’t be afraid to buy second hand as that’s where some of the best bargains are to be had.

The tips above can help you set yourself up a great home gym that saves you a ton of time and money with your health goals. Just remember to stay safe and always put practicality first. So you protect your home and your health during this exciting new home improvement process.
