The Benefits of Having a Small Dog

Dog ownership is probably one of the best life experiences a person can have. Dogs bring endless joy to our lives. They are playful, cute and known for being incredibly loyal. However, when it comes to choosing a dog, everyone has their own preferences when it comes to breeds.

Some people want big dogs such as German shepherds, Rhodesian ridgebacks and American bulldogs for protection, their loveable temperament or because they are more athletic and would make brilliant running buddies. However, small breeds such as pugs, French bulldogs and dachshunds are also becoming increasingly popular. If you are considering getting yourself a smaller dog, here are some of the reasons why it may be a good call :

Cost Less to Feed

By their nature, small dogs eat less and are cheaper to feed as a result. Small dogs like chihuahuas or jack russells become satiated far quicker than bigger dogs like golden retrievers or German shepherds. In fact, you can purchase specific small dog food which is tailored for the needs of smaller dog breeds.

Easier to Transport

Traveling with a big dog can be difficult. Small dogs are less cumbersome and you can even get a specially designed handbag for carrying your dog around. Furthermore, you’ll probably find that small dogs are generally more welcome on public transport like buses and trains. If you are a frequent flyer and want your dog to fly internationally, you’ll probably be pleased to learn that some airlines allow dogs to travel in the cabin if they weigh less than 5kg.

Well Suited for Apartment Living

Not all of us have spacious homes with vast gardens where our dogs can roam free. Many people, especially those living in cities, tend to stay in apartments. Small dogs are better suited to living in small confines as they don’t require as much space.

Easier to Manage On a Leash

Regardless of a dog’s size, they all need a daily walk. However, small dogs are easier to manage on a leash simply because of the size and weight. If a big dog is disobedient, it can be a real battle to handle them and it can often seem like it’s the dog taking the owner for a walk rather than the other way around.

Easier to Groom

Most dogs hate being groomed. However, battling to wash a great dane can be a huge mission for the owner because the dog will have the upper hand physically. When dealing with a smaller breed dog grooming, teeth cleaning and ear-care is simply that little bit easier because of their size and lesser strength capabilities.

Regardless of the type of dog you decide to take on, dog ownership will always have its ups and downs. However, it is important to choose the kind of dog that is conducive to your lifestyle and physical limitations. There will be advantages and disadvantages no matter which breed you decide to go for, so do your research and choose a pup that feels right for you, and everything else will fall into place eventually.
