The Growth of TikTok

Social media has changed the way people live their daily lives. Social media has also had a major influence in the professional world. Among the various social media platforms including Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram, perhaps no platform has grown faster than TikTok. Some of the latest TikTok news shows that the app has more than 1.5 billion downloads from the App Store on Google Play. One of the many questions that people have about this platform is how it has grown so quickly.

For those who might not know, TikTok is a social media platform where users can post videos. The vast majority of videos on TikTok are less than a minute long. People can choose to follow profiles that are of interest from them and users try to gain as many TikTok followers as possible. There is even a new saying that people on TikTok are trying to become “TikTok famous.” With the popularity of the platform, it is important to note a few important points.

First, much of the recent growth of  TikTok has been due to the rising popularity in India. India is one of the world’s most populous countries and only recently learned about the app. Now, close to a third of the downloads of TikTok have taken place in India. In second place was China, with close to 12 percent of downloads taking place in the world’s most populous country. Finally, the United States came in third.

With the rapid growth of TikTok, many people are feeling that the app is becoming a threat to Facebook, which has a much longer track record and is largely seen as the beacon of social media. One of the most important demographics of TikTok is generation Z. This younger demographic appears to prefer other social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat over Facebook. One of the reasons why people think Facebook is becoming concerned is that Facebook owns most of the other social media platforms that would otherwise be Facebook’s biggest competition. As of now, Facebook does not own TikTok. So far this year, TikTok has outpaced Facebook app downloads by a significant margin.

While TikTok is growing quickly, it is also important to note that the number of downloads is not the only way to quantify the popularity of an app; however, it is one of the most important metrics. As TikTok continues to add new features and users, the popularity of the app is only going to continue to grow. TikTok is on pace to catch Facebook in the near future. It will be exciting to see what other videos people come up with and post on the popular platform. Becoming TikTok famous appears to be an important goal for many people.
