Building a Legal Practice in 2020

It takes a lot of work to graduate from law school. When someone has finally earned that cherished JD after his or her name, the question is, “what do I do now?” There are numerous paths available for lawyers. Some people decide to go into industry or the corporate world. Others will try to pass the bar exam and start their own law firm. At the same time, going to law school provides someone with a focused set of skills. Law school does not teach someone how to start and run a business. With this in mind, it is important for people to think about how they can build a legal practice in 2020.

First, practicing law is both a business as well as a profession. Therefore, anyone who wants to own a law firm and run it successfully must agree to both paths. The skills that it takes for someone to be a good lawyer are not the same as the skills that someone needs to run a successful business. Sure, being a good lawyer is going to help the business side of law; however, it is critical for lawyers to think about how they can spread the word regarding their firm and how they can recruit clients.

There are a number of benefits to opening a law firm when it comes to pursuing a personal injury practice, a wrongful death practice, or even a criminal defense firm. One of the biggest benefits is that people will be able to choose their own clients. Lawyers will be able to narrow their focus and limit the spoke to what they want to do. Furthermore, lawyers will have total autonomy over their schedules. Finally, the opportunity to develop a unique business model is also important. Knowing about these benefits is one of the keys when setting up a legal practice.

In order to build and run a successful legal practice, it is a good idea to set goals. These goals need to exist to fulfill both personal and business goals. Think about what is important and how many days off someone wants to have per year. Then, consider when the retirement date is going to be. Finally, how much personal time is going to be needed every day to remain both physically and mentally healthy. The answers to these questions are going to play a major role in the model of the law firm.

Then, when the doors open for the law firm, make sure to have a few key performance indicators, also known as KPIs, in place that can be used to monitor the health of the firm. This might include billable hours, case load, win rate, and more. Make sure to surround the firm with a reliable support team that provides quality services. This is going to be a major key to the success of a law firm.
