Interior Design Tips for First Time Buyers

Buying our first home is a huge milestone and when we finally get the keys, a big sigh of relief is heard! As well as feeling excited of the idea, decorating and deciding how you’re going to have things can be a little daunting too! But that’s all part of the fun…

Unfortunately, buying your first home isn’t going to be all fun and games. You are likely to encounter some issues with the home that you weren’t expecting. You are probably going to find that the home doesn’t look quite as nice when it is bare, since you probably saw a lot of pictures, curtains and other amenities when you saw it during the staging process.

This means that you are going to have to do some interior design work. But where do you get started?

Interior Design Guidelines for Your New Home

Before we move in, most of us have a vision of how we want our interiors to look, whether that be a particular theme, certain furniture we want or even just winging it. However, things never seem to work out exactly as you plan, as either your vision wasn’t quite realistic or budget gets in the way, it’s the worst thing! So here are some tips to follow to avoid this…

Don’t overdo it

The modern world is all about clean and fresh interiors, nobody really goes for little ornaments dotted around the place anymore. It can be tempting to go overboard and feel the lack of decorating with lots of bits, but it will only make it feel tacky. You don’t want too much clutter! Be minimal in your approach, get the decorating, flooring and furniture done first then think about accessories so you can work them around the bigger things. Plants are always a nice touch or a few artsy paintings for the wall. But keep it simple, you might decide you don’t want it like that and change it around soon enough.

Don’t wing it too much

As much as winging it can be good fun with interiors, going into it totally blind is a no no. It’s always good to have some idea, even if it’s just a rough plan. No project should be embarked upon without some sort of design plan. That means picking a colour scheme, deciding whether you want it rustic, contemporary or classical. You can then base your interior around that. Don’t be too strict, but just have some idea on where to start!

Don’t be afraid to ask for professional help

It’s your first home, so you’re not going to have all the answers and it’s totally fine to ask for help. If you’re finding it hard to think or execute your ideas, then hiring an interior designer is a good place to start to get your creative juices flowing.

Interior Design Doesn’t Have to Be Difficult

There are a lot of things that you need to think about when you are buying a new home. One of the most important things is interior design. You should follow the tips listed above.
