Online advertisement is a relatively new trend that has been growing exponentially during the past few decades, and banner advertisement plays a vital part in this growth.

There are many different online banner types, styles, and use cases, and some specific positions on a website work better than the other ones.

That being said, banner advertisement is not a guaranteed success for everyone – creating a good banner is also important since it decides a major part of your advertisement campaign online.

There are times when you don’t have the ability to delegate everything to a graphic designer, too, so it’s rather important for everyone to understand the basics of banner creation as a whole.

First of all, there are four vital parts that, when combined, create a banner – slogan, logo, background, and CTA (Call-to-Action). A slogan is supposed to inform the audience about the ad campaign in question while a logo represents the unique nature of your brand.

A background, on the other hand, is there to get people’s attention in the first place, and the CTA is the main part that drives the clicks for your ad with a motivational call to action of sorts.

Additionally, there are three main banner types – desktop, tablet, and mobile.

The rapid increase in the number of smartphone users in the past decade has led to a lot of companies putting more effort into making mobile ads since they seem to bring much more attention than ever before.

So, how to create a banner? There are also several different methods that could be used to create a banner. 

The first one might be the most obvious one since we already mentioned it – outsourcing your banner design to a designer and barely doing anything yourself.

However, there are also two other methods – creating your own banner using some sort of graphic design software (Photoshop), and working within a single online platform for all of your design-related needs (Viewst).

Each of these methods could be used to achieve the same end result – receiving a banner that you can use for online advertisement. With that being said, we’ve only talked about static banners so far – even though animation is also widely used in the field of banner advertisement.

Animated banner advertisement

It’s safe to say that the field of banner advertisement, in general, is highly competitive right now, with each ad competing for your attention and your clicks.

However, static images have their own limits, and this is where the animation comes in. Animated banners can attract far more attention to themselves when compared to the regular static ones.

Of course, animation, in general, is an impressively complicated topic on its own. However, most of the time banner animation has no need to implement anything complex, since each banner has barely a few seconds to be noticed by passing glance in the first place. 

This means that the animation in the context of banner advertisement could mean as little as just a few animated frames. That’s not to say that these few frames of animation would be easy to create.

As with the previous topic, there are different software appliances that can be used to create an animated banner, with the most popular one being Photoshop.

As an incredibly versatile graphic design tool, Photoshop can be used to create and fine-tune almost any kind of animation you can think of, including transitions, frame timers, and so on.

Now that we’ve covered both static and animated banner creation, it’s also fair to mention different formats that can be used to create and/or save the banner in question. These formats are PNG, GIF, JPG, and HTML5 – with the last format serving as our next topic.

Creating banners with HTML5

Banners created using HTML can easily serve all of the same purposes as any other JPG or PNG banner – promoting, SEO, marketplace, and many other purposes.

However, while all of the other file types imply using a graphical designer tool of sorts, HTML banners can be created using nothing but a few strings of code – and a separate picture to serve as a background.

If you’re finding that method somewhat complicated, there are still methods in place to work with banner creation just like in any graphic design software – and Google Web Designer is a great example for this case. 

Since Google Web Designer is relatively close to how it works with any of your regular graphic design software, the process of banner creation is also mostly similar.

However, there are some limitations of this specific software, such as no support for videos, no external font support, no expandable ads support, and so on.

Of course, this is not the only piece of software that can be used to create your own HTML5 banner. There are also template distributors and online ad builders that can work with this format.

Template distributor sites are working as a third party between a designer and a product owner. The latter can browse the list of available ad designs and custom-fit the one that they like the most via contacting the creator of that design.

Online ad builders act as a more traditional method of ad creation, where you have to do most of the work by yourself, with the platform presenting you a variety of templates, images, objects, fonts, and so on.

Banner creation is not a particularly complicated topic, although there are some nuances here and there that could become problematic in specific cases.

Luckily enough, there are many choices out there, and the market for the software in question is highly competitive, so that you, as a customer, could get the best product possible.
